Qatar is interested in products from Kazakhstan
However, a number of reasons do not allow to develop joint trade at a higher level
Chilled lamb, vegetables, fruits, dried fruits and honey. The State of Qatar is interested first of all in supply of these products from Kazakhstan, but there are no short ways to deliver this perishable product. This factor doesn’t give the opportunity to arrange supplies.
"Unfortunately, I must say that the economic and trade cooperation with us is small scale”, - said Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Qatar Askar Shokybaev.
Mutual trade in 2015 between Kazakhstan and Qatar amounted to only 463,500 US dollars, of which 440.9 - import. According to A. Shokybaev, in 2014 the turnover was at the level of 364 thousand dollars.
"First of all, for the development of such cooperation it is necessary to establish a direct air service, we are talking about those foods that are perishable. Land transport or railway transport is unapplicable. We hope that soon we will establish trade and economic cooperation", - added the diplomat.
As for Qatar, the country actively develops its investment potential, which, as it was noted by Mr. Ambassador, does not suffer under the impact of the global crisis.
"Qatar is one of the few countries in the world that despite the global economic crisis is still a country that has this potential. Not for nothing in Doha are accredited more than one hundred foreign embassies and representative offices, each foreign representation located in Doha tends to develop investment cooperation, and it should be noted that the Qataris are reluctant on these things ", - stated A. Shokybaev.
A major role in this is played by Qatari investment fund, state policies aimed at investment in promising large-scale projects. One such projects will be Qatar's participation in Kazakhstan's infrastructure fund with the share 100 million USD. According to R. Shokybaeva negotiations "are still ongoing".
Another large-scale joint project - a joint venture between “Kazatomprom” and “Qatar Solar Energy”, there is a road map for the establishment of a joint venture in the second half of 2016.
It is expected that "Kazatomprom" will own the shares in the joint venture 49%, while the Qatari side will receive 51%, we are talking about the construction of a plant to produce photovoltaic modules of 300 MW in Doha.
